M
any things have happened since I visited with you through my last column, written on a cold winter’s night in December. We have celebrated the arrival of a New Year and as some would argue, the real beginning of the new millenium. We waited with anticipation through the long, unprecedented election of a new President, and we finally watched with hope for a better tomorrow as the new administration took the oath of office.

It is now time to enjoy the warmth and freshness of Spring. The earth is coming alive again with the growth of vegetation and the birth of many living beings. We will soon observe Easter, Passover and other rites of the season and remember events that give us hope and freedom.

Approximately 10 days after President Bush began his new and awesome responsibilities; he fulfilled a promise made during his campaign. He presented his plan for "tearing down the barriers to equality that face the 54 million Americans with disabilities." This plan, entitled New Freedom Initiative, is composed of the following key components:
  • Increase Access to Technologies,
  • Expand Educational Opportunities,
  • Integrate Americans with Disabilities in the Workforce,
  • Promote Full Access to Community Life.
I was privileged to be in attendance with many of you when the President unveiled this comprehensive plan. The room was filled with excitement, hope and promise that priority would be given to implementing policy and providing resources that would allow people with disabilities to exercise their right to freedom and choice.

If freedom and choice are important to you, I urge you to join me in making sure the New Freedom Initiative does not become just another great plan that collects dust and doesn’t come into being. As Spring rolls into the "lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer", do not become complacent. Use all of your advocacy skills to inform your policymakers that Freedom is our Right.
